It’s an absolute honor that one of mine was selected by the panel of jurors to be displayed at the 34th Annual Juried Exhibition by the Scarborough Arts (2019).

About the Exhibit and the theme: Today, where everyone is dealing with the anxieties of daily life, it is often difficult to take time to reflect on our thoughts and feelings, to sit back and ask ourselves one question, ‘Who am I?’. It was an art exhibit inviting the visitors to take an introspective journey that focuses on the importance of taking time for ourselves, to develop a more thorough understanding of our core values, capabilities, and ambitions, and more importantly our triumphs. This theme drew me in as it wasn’t just relevant for our time but also something I felt each individual can relate to on a deeper level through each of our unique experiences that still unite us.

It teaches us our core values, capabilities and what we want to strive to achieve for the future. This artwork represents the growth of a coloured young woman who is still blooming into who she is. Learning and growing along the way, each fully blossomed flower representing something she has triumphed and overcome.

This relates back to how I felt as a young girl moving to Canada and continuing to grow into who I am today and who I want to be tomorrow. This required stepping back and looking at how far I’ve come, being thankful for the lifelong lessons and giving importance to my mental health as an individual. Human self-reflection in life is necessary to thoroughly examine and see the type of person we want to be. This all started with adjusting to an environment I wasn’t familiar with coming from an immigrant family and learning to water my roots in order to grow.
